As a Design Lead in VMware’s new exciting Modern Applications Business Unit (MAPBU) team you will apply your craft on a range of products, services, and experiments. Our culture provides opportunity to explore around the technologies we’re researching and investing in. Some of your work will be functional, practical user interaction design, applied to software used by thousands of people. Other work will be speculative, generative explorations that you carry out in partnership across the organization to flesh out, frame, and help prioritize solutions in an ever evolving and complex problem space.

Role Overview

The primary purpose of the Design Lead (DL) role is to provide design leadership to an area consisting of multiple product teams. Specifically, this Deployment Lifecycle Lead role will be providing design leadership to the three teams along with any future teams that may emerge in this area.

A design lead helps teams carry the responsibility of successfully understanding, conveying, and executing within a product area through mentoring and coaching teams and individuals in discovery efforts, design decisions, and supports solution delivery. They also work alongside Product and Engineering Leadership and can recognize process improvement for the product area as a whole.

We are looking for someone to fill the role of Design Lead for the Deployment Lifecycle.

Program Overview

You will be working in the deployment lifecycle group where you will help drive outcomes for our customers and internal teams delivering value to VMware Tanzu. The deployment lifecycle group is responsible for creating a cohesive experience for our customers - from onboarding, expansion, to staying up to date. You will help our customers and internal teams move forward fast and consistently.

What will this Design Lead do on a day-to-day basis?

The day-to-day experience of a Design Lead varies, but typically there will be some amount of pairing with designers and PMs on teams, as well as working with anchors, engineers, and PMs across teams to provide area-wide leadership and direction. There will also be a substantial amount of time spent in meetings, workshops, customer calls, etc. The Design Lead will also be expected to acquire deep relevant domain experience for the teams in the area.

  • Lead User Centered Design for the product area

    Integrates a user centered design approach to problem solving

    Understands, records and explains problems and opportunities for users and works with cross-functional leadership to model and prioritize

    Solution Exploration/Definition and Validation in collaboration with Product and Engineering Leadership

  • Focus on Outcomes

    Collaborates with Product and Engineering Lead on defining a vision and outcome based roadmap

    Establishes outcomes based on validated customer problems and use cases

  • Working with and across teams

    Lead teams so that product designers, product managers and engineers create, communicate and align around their specific product vision and roadmap

    Oversees the user experience across the teams in a Product Area and makes appropriate suggestions to the Product and Engineering Lead to rearrange the team structure as needed.

    Encourage team and teams to work effectively in a cross-discipline manner and redistribute activities more sustainably

    Provide timely, actionable, specific, and kind feedback frequently

    Seeks out customer and prospect feedback, includes others in customer sessions where appropriate, and represents the voice-of-the-customer to R&D when the customer is not in the room

  • Provides direct feedback to other leaders and individual contributors at Tanzu

    Foster healthy relationships, tight feedback loops, and shared ownership with other parts of the organization

  • Participation in Working Groups

    Collaborate with Product Lead to organize a Product Working Group which shares ownership of the product area vision and invites participation from different organizations

    Participate in cross business unit working groups and collaborate with the field, product marketing, and support

  • What are the prerequisites for applying for this role?

  • Demonstrated thought leadership and depth of knowledge for Design, Lean Product, and Agile

  • Capable of engaging with executive leadership to ensure appropriate visibility is provided in order to make key decisions about Tanzu’s company strategy

  • Successful navigation of cross team dependencies and effective enablement of flow across multiple teams.

  • Proven ability to give critical feedback in a timely, actionable, specific, and kind manner

  • Demonstrated focus on business-oriented outcomes and the ability to drive research that influences the roadmap for products 

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively coach teams on design thinking to help enable research

  • We are looking for someone who has the heart of a teacher and can help mentor and train people. Someone who can build and share empathy with people in order to deeply understand them and their needs.

  • We are passionate about building teams with a wide variety of experience, backgrounds and interests

  • Given the nature of the role, preference will be given to candidates that are located in SF or Denver, however candidates working remotely across the US may also apply.
